5 Tips For Healthy Skin After 60

As dermatologists, we have conversations every single day with women in their 60’s and beyond who are worried about the appearance of their skin. Taking care of your skin after 60 requires different products and routines than you would have used in your 40’s or 50’s.

Rather than jump to invasive cosmetic procedures, we always want to help our clients and community take proactive steps to minimize the appearance of aging and help prolong that healthy, young-looking skin.

So what can you do to keep that skin healthy after 60? Here are five tips:

DON’T OVER-EXFOLIATE

You’ve probably spent your entire adult-life being told exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! But as your skin ages, it becomes more fragile and thin, so this is one practice that you need to modify. Discontinue using the harsher and stronger options, and select an alternative that will both exfoliate and hydrate at the same time.

MAKE MOISTURIZING A PRIORITY

As with your exfoliation routine, ensure that you’re making keeping your skin hydrated a top priority. Allowing the skin to dry out will be one of the main aging culprits, so it’s essential to stay moisturized. Exfoliate less frequently, use gentle cleansers that hydrate simultaneously, and consider using a thicker nighttime moisturizer as well.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

It’s easy to forget that what we put into our bodies often shows up on our skin. This becomes even more important for skin care after 60, and some foods are proven to help keep your skin healthy and avoid pre-mature aging. Some of these foods include red bell peppers, dark chocolate, coconut oil, spinach, celery, papaya, and carrots. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water!

STOP SMOKING

You’ve heard this one a million times, but have you thought of it in the context of your skin? We all know the dangers of smoking, but it’s also been proven to cause premature aging of the skin, along with increased wrinkles. If you’re still smoking, your skin is another reason to seek professional help to make the change finally.

AVOID LENGTHLY HOT SHOWERS AND BATHS

We all love a hot shower or nice long bath, but the exposure to the hot water will often dry out your skin. If you can’t give up those hot baths, start using some bath oil to keep the skin moist and be sure to also moisturize afterward.

If you’re concerned about your skincare routine or would like to discuss ways to improve the appearance of your skin, your local dermatologists in Sarasota, Bradenton, or Lakewood Ranch are always available for consultation.
