Skin Cancer Screening FAQ
Explore answers to common questions about skin cancer screenings and skin checks so you feel fully informed and prepared for your next appointment.
How often should I get a skin cancer screening?
Most people benefit from an annual skin cancer screening. If you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair skin, a high number of moles or other risk factors, your dermatologist may recommend more frequent screenings.
When should you start getting full body skin cancer screenings?
It is a good idea to begin screenings in early adulthood, especially if you have risk factors for skin cancer. However, it is never too late to start. Regular screenings play an important role in long-term skin health.
What can I expect during a full body skin cancer screening?
A full body screening is a head-to-toe examination performed by a dermatologist. Your provider will assess moles, freckles and other skin markings to identify any changes or signs of skin cancer. The process is thorough, comfortable and designed to keep you informed about your skin health.
How should I prepare for a skin cancer screening?
Before your screening, avoid wearing makeup or nail polish, since these can hide areas of the skin. It can also be helpful to make a list of any spots you want your dermatologist to evaluate.
Does insurance cover skin cancer screening?
Many insurance plans cover skin cancer screenings, but coverage can vary. Check with your insurance provider to confirm the specific details of your plan.
Does Medicare pay for annual skin checks from a dermatologist?
Medicare may cover skin cancer screenings in certain circumstances, especially for individuals at higher risk. Contact Medicare or your healthcare provider to understand your specific coverage.
Is mole mapping necessary for everyone?
Mole mapping is especially helpful for people who have many moles, atypical moles or a family history of skin cancer. It creates a detailed photographic record to support early detection of changes over time.
Can skin cancer screenings detect all types of skin cancer?
Skin cancer screenings are an essential tool for identifying melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and other types of skin cancer. Early detection greatly improves treatment outcomes.
What should I do if I notice a change in my skin between screenings?
If you see any new or changing spots, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist as soon as possible. Prompt evaluation ensures that potential concerns are addressed quickly.
Are there steps I can take to protect my skin between screenings?
Yes. Use sunscreen daily, wear protective clothing, avoid peak sun hours and steer clear of tanning beds. These habits significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

They truly care and the advice and care is felt from the moment you walk in and the phone call from the doctor her self making sure I was feeling good and with NO complications. They took the time to explain everything and boy did they do a great job. They eased my worries and gave me a sense of peace knowing they know what they are doing and how to best go about it.
I wore my bandage after my surgery like a badge of honor sharing my story on how my sister Maria put it off over and over until it was too late. PLEASE DO IT FOR YOUR SELF BUT ABOVE ALL FOR ALL THOSE THAT LOVE YOU.
My advice.
Do not wait or put off having spots, bumps or irregular tags etc on your skin checked out. Get it check as soon as possible and they will take great care and explain options and how to tackle it. Do not hesitate do not put it off.
Thank you Arsenault Dermatology for caring so much about what you do AND following up afterwards.
