Each October, we observe Eczema Awareness Month to highlight a skin condition that touches millions of lives. As a dermatologic provider, I see how eczema goes beyond the surface. In addition to affecting your skin, it can also impact your confidence, sleep, and overall well-being.
What Is Eczema?
Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that can cause dryness, itching, redness, and sometimes cracking or oozing. These skin changes are often coupled with an itch that just won’t quit. Eczema involves a mix of genetic factors, immune system response, environmental triggers, and emotional stress.
Eczema can develop at any age. It often begins in childhood and may continue into adulthood.
Why Awareness Matters
Eczema isn’t life-threatening, but it can deeply affect daily life. Many people struggle in silence, trying home remedies or drugstore creams without lasting relief. Awareness is essential because effective treatments are available, and no one should feel like they have to “just live with it.”
Eczema Awareness Month is a time to:
- Educate the public about symptoms and triggers
- Encourage early diagnosis and treatment
- Advocate for better access to care and medications
- Support those living with eczema through community and resources
Treatment Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
At Arsenault Dermatology, we take a personalized approach to eczema care. Treatment may include:
- Topical therapies like non-steroidal creams or corticosteroids
- Oral medications or biologics for moderate to severe cases
- Lifestyle adjustments to reduce flare-ups (like avoiding harsh soaps or allergens)
- Moisturization routines to restore the skin barrier
We also offer patch testing to identify potential allergens and help patients understand what might be triggering their symptoms.
