Mohs Surgery For Basal Cell Carcinoma

Mohs Surgery For Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer medical professionals see. This type of skin cancer varies in the way it presents itself and can be in the form of an open sore, a red or pink patch, a shiny bump, or even a scar-like mark. These growths line the deepest part of your top layer of skin and are most often caused by sun damage.

These tumors rarely spread from the initial growth site, but it does happen in extremely rare cases. While not typically life-threatening, these growths can become disfiguring if left untreated.

The most common form of treatment for basal cell carcinoma continues to be Mohs surgery

Around since the 1930’s, this procedure is considered to be the most effective solution to remove BCC from the body. With a cure rate of 98% or higher, it’s no question why Dermatologists and medical professionals alike continue to use this form of surgery. Because of its low recurrence rates, phenomenal cure rates, and cosmetic results, this established skin cancer treatment is still on the rise.

What makes Mohs surgery unique and extremely effective is that the microscopic examination of removed tissues is actually happening during the surgery, rather than after. While this presents obvious hurdles of workforce and time, the efficacy speaks for itself. The surgeon removes the skin tissue, layer by layer. Rather than guessing, or going deeper or wider than necessary, each layer of removed skin is checked for the presence of cancer cells. Once the surgeon reaches the cancer-free skin, the procedure is stopped. They can remove cancer while leaving the healthy skin intact.

The procedure can be done right in your Dermatologist’s office, under local anesthetic. It usually takes a few hours, so you’re in and out over the course of a day.

Dr. Nicholas and Calista were the best! I had to get a mole removed which caused me to faint (not their fault, that happens to me a lot with needles). Anyways they did an amazing job calming me down and comforting me. Great and supportive staff!

I have to say I have had very few pleasant experiences in Dermatology offices. I was dreading my first appointment, As we Moved to Florida a couple of years ago, and I was overdue for a checkup. It’s been probably 25 years since I’ve had a good experience with a dermatologist. Keep in mind I’ve never really had any major skin issues. Arsenault absolutely exceeded my expectations! I was very surprised! They were fantastic, treating me with dignity, and made me feel comfortable in a potentially embarrassing situation. I would recommend them to anyone.
